Top 9 books Banned by indian government
Books banned by indian government |
The
reputation of having a slight view towards India has always been a matter of
discussion. Whether it is with equal rights, social issues or even literature.
Books are prohibited in India for all sorts of reasons, ranging from being
detrimental to the integrity of the nation to mere displeasure. Freedom to
speak is a very difficult line to walk, which is why there is really no reason
to ban something for being "garbage".
Some books are banned here in India.
1. The Satanic Verses by Salman
Rushdie
Prohibited
for allegedly insulting the Prophet.
The fourth
novel by Rushdie, a book popularizing the word 'fatwa' in the literary
community, is banned in India and a group of other countries. A large section
of the Muslim community feels that this is an insult to the legend of Prophet
Muhammad.
2. The Hindus: An Alternative
History by Wendy Doniger
Banned to
depict Indian gods in a polite manner.
In this
683-page book, a situation of confrontation between the Education Bachao
Andolan Samiti and uncle and aunts was observed in India. Although well
researched, many similes related to Indian deities in this book describe the
word Go to Doom Dhai
3. Understanding Islam through
Hadis by Ram Swarup
Banned being
strict towards Islam
Another book
that faced the wrath of the Muslim community. This Ram Swaroop statement dealt
with the issues of political Islam, only provoking the public and banning
itself and it was arrested by the publisher.
4. The Ramayana as told by
Aubrey Menen
Banned
satire on Ramayana.
Aubrey's
reputation as a satirist could not help ban his lighthearted and jovial version
of the Indian mythological epic. Orthodox Hindus are not known for their
prudence, and in 1956 the book was banned.
5. Jinnah:
India-Partition-Independence by Jaswant Singh
Banned being
sympathetic to Jinnah.
The book was
restricted to portraying Jinnah in a purposeful way rather than as a painted
nation breaker. It criticized the policies of Nehru and Sardar Patel, as we all
know whether anyone will get an ax, facts or not.
6. The Price of Power by
Seymour Hersh
Morarji was
the banned CIA informer for Desai's suggestion.
Morarji
Desai, the Indian Prime Minister and famous urine drinker, was accused in this
book of supplying secrets to the CIA. He ran a case against this
"insanity", and banned the book in India.
7. Lajja by Taslima Nasreen
Banned for
hurting Muslim sentiments.
Another
member of the Fatwa clan, this Bangladeshi writer's book based on the
demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1993, was banned in India. It is said to be
abusive to Muslims and degrading to Islam.
8. An Area of Darkness by V.S.
Naipaul
Restrictions
were imposed for the portrayal of India in an objective manner.
The story
was almost immediately banned by the controversial writer about his journey
through India in the 60s. The reason for the direct social reflection and focus
on India's difficulties is believed to be that it was banned, as most are
accustomed to higher-ups.
9. The Heart of India by
Alexander Campbell
Banned being
"repulsive".
This book
cannot be imported into India. Published in 1958, it was about India's economic
policies and politics. It was banned for being "repulsive".
